Joyce Cooper-Kahn, Ph.D.

She is a clinical child psychologist and has been in practice for over 20 years, specializing in helping children and their families to manage behavioral, emotional and academic challenges.

In her work, Dr. Cooper-Kahn brings together science, clinical experience, and an appreciation for the daily demands of those raising and teaching children. Her passion lies at this junction where psychology informs daily life.

Dr. Cooper-Kahn enjoys working with the full range of developmental issues in children. She provides direct intervention as well as consultation to parents and teachers on ways to facilitate optimal development and build competencies in children. She is often called upon for consultations and second opinions regarding complex cases. Dr. Cooper-Kahn has particular expertise in attention disorders, learning disabilities and school consultation with an emphasis on interventions for executive functioning difficulties. She is the co-author of the award-winning book, Late, Lost and Unprepared: A Parent's Guide to Helping Children with Executive Functioning. That book introduced readers to her enthusiasm, expertise and straightforward guidance on ways to help youth with ADHD and executive functioning weaknesses. Boosting Executive Skills in the Classroom: A Practical Guide for Educators, co-authored with Learning Specialist Margaret Foster, M.A., brings the same clarity and practical approach to the school setting. It outlines specific strategies that can help parents, as well as teachers, to support students with weaknesses in executive skills.

Dr. Cooper-Kahn is also a well-known speaker in the community and at national and international conferences.

She earned her doctorate from Catholic University in 1986. Before entering full-time private practice in 1994, Dr. Cooper-Kahn was on the staff of The Kennedy-Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was the clinical director of Bowie Therapeutic Nursery Center.
